Vistas

vista
Sue Vincent’s #Writephoto

A desolate path. A path that glowed with hopes. A path that you chose and we looked at you with pride. A path that is waiting.
A vista that made our summers blissful but you found wider ones, away from us, from the hills that raised you. How easily do we forget the fun of growing up!

You said you would come back. I know you never lie. Each day we sit here and rush back to our cottage to hear some news about you but the only connection we have with you sits mute.
You said you would keep in touch. I know you never forget your promises. Your dad disagrees. He says, “I don’t care.” But I can see his moist eyes; a lump in his throat is also visible.

I don’t believe what he says. I tell him I care; the umbilical cord is throbbing within me. I know the call would reach you.
The path gapes at me. The flowers don’t bloom any more. Birds look at my face and wonder whether they should sing a happy song. Only wind witches around me.
The candle is burning, its flame may be threatened by the wind but it refuses to die down. I have many more to brighten my evenings. The flickering flame exudes a thousand messages. I can discern them.

I know it is the way of the world. I know empty nesters wait, wait for a moment of joy. I know that joy is within you, gathering momentum. I know you would bring it home with all the wisdom of the world.
I gave you that choice. I gave you wings and I am proud of them.

They Soar Higher Than Clouds

storm-clouds-1-1
Sue Vincent’s #Writephoto

Dark, rumbling clouds stirred him out. He stretched and looked around. Some of his friends were flying high but he couldn’t miss the sound – muffled yet clear.

“What are you digging?” Vendatta stood at the edge of the valley.
“Souls.”
“What for?”
“To lend… to exchange.”
“Really? But souls are said to be free. They soar higher than clouds.”
“Beliefs don’t misguide me. I know my passion.”
“Where do you find them?”
“Some are buried and some fly high. Some I capture and bury.”
“Can you lend me one?”
“Sure,” said the Digger.
“Can I keep it forever?”
“Depends! If you have the inclination and the strength.”

All his depression melted.
Vendatta was a changed man now. He knew his destination.

Misty Eyes

veiled-1
Sue Vincent’s #Writephoto

Misty maven’s visit
Veils the mounts
Each day before sun saunters in
To lend its colors to all –

A fusion that fosters
Hope and harmony.
Can you sense the vibes?
Can you see the equity?

Open those misty eyes
Veiled with societal norms,
With self-written archaic laws
Look around and quit myopia

Living in the haze of past
Glowering at the inevitable change
Nursing prejudices that slash spirits
Wouldn’t change the color of blood.

Guardians

watchers
Sue Vincent’s #Writephoto

Frozen faces?
Don’t mistake them for stones
They are the faces of humanity
They tell the untold misery.

Sunburnt and sunken?
Don’t judge their color
They are unsung heroes
Tortured souls who refused to give up.

Ask the village elders
Their valor shines in their faces
They earned your freedom
They exemplify human values.

Sacrosanct sentinels of eons
Conceal sagas of savagery
Living reminders of venom
That is fed into human blood.

Wild flowers bloom around them
Comforting their distressed hearts
That still beat for those
Who value free thoughts.

The Red Bridge

painted
Sue Vincent’s #Writephoto

We crossed the bridge and entered the forest.
Dense, dark, damp.
The uneven trail meandered
Roots of trees trounced our venture
But we trudged on.

Day four of our adventure ended at the same place.
Back on the same bridge,
Hanging over the pond
Painted by Mother Nature.
We stood confounded

Now what? We looked at each other
Four friends, full of fire
Explorations kept it ablaze
Such dead ends couldn’t douse
The light within that led us.

The red bridge was our anchor
But there were three of them
Two more we had to find –
Green and blue,
To win the rainbow contest.

The quest is on with
Cerulean sky – our sentinel
Green awning – our angel
Lucent gold – our mentor
Silvery Luna – our comforter
And each heart – the wanderer.
