The Last Gift
This ordinary piece of paper
Which conceals all…
Those unheard words, whimsical wishes
Eternal entreaties, abiding aspirations
A dazzling display of words
May seem insignificant to you.
This letter – the last attempt to persuade you,
To remind you
Of the moments etched on our hearts,
Of the hours that walked with us,
Of the words that ignited us,
You know them so well.
This treasure, signed with the same love
That we lost in the maelstrom of life
Please consider it as my last gift,
A gentle flame that still flickers
Despite the death
That’s knocking at my door.

To me, leaving behind your own words is the greatest gift of all. I loved this.

The power of the letter! I see several of your readers got emotional, reading this. I find it deep and emotive and motivational. We should keep writing letters – real letters – and mail them. And do this before the “last one.” ❤
So true! Letters got lost in the razzmatazz of the modern world! They’ll never gain their status now. Thank you for sharing your thoughts Pam, nice to see you.
I really like the direction this poem took – and I skimmed the comments -which was enriching! I did not think this was depressing because there was something alive and active about knowing the power the letter and words would have…. very powerful…
