The Cave
Light lived in the cave of hope
Carved by an unknown Artist,
This cave promised luck.
Only those who dared to dream beyond destiny
Could enter this cave.
A cave that proclaimed:
“Take what you need.”
Ha! I scoffed at the choices:
Love? I’ve always had enough.
Hope? My oldest pal.
Passion? I don’t need it now.
Courage? Well, who can doubt my grit?
Happiness? Can you keep it?
Money? I have enough.
Luck –that’s what made me stagger.
I knew it was a fake promise.
I knew luck was a deluder, a temerous traitor
Yet the allure clutched my hand.
“Take what you need,” reverberated.
The cave was long, damp and narrow
Darkness often throttled me
Thorny hands bruised my fingers
Lack of sleep created graphics,
Strange light danced before my eyes.
Holding the hand of my oldest pal,
I trudged the endless path.

A profound piece Balroop. We do need them all, but hard to believe that it could be as easy as this. Thanks for joining in.
None of those are easy, my friend but everything can be accomplished with words. 😊 Thank you for the inspiration.
Very true my friend. You’re very welcome

Wonderful poetry!
Thank you Violet.
Balroop, this is exceptional! Love how you personified luck and the pursuit of it.
Thank you Punam, I am delighted to hear that. It’s the ambiguity of luck that inspired those thoughts. While we can nurture love, courage, happiness and hope, luck is beyond our control.
You are so right, Balroop. I really love your poem. You are very welcome.
The depth of your connection to this challenge is so very personal, that I felt very much the voyeur here.
Thank you so much for understanding the spirit of this poem, Annette. I am glad you came along.

Cave is a metaphor Denise. We can’t avoid it. 😊

Loved this Balroop. This line in particular – “I knew luck was a deluder, a temerous traitor” – we surely have to make our own luck. 😍
I wish we could make our own luck! Thank you for sharing your thoughts Deb.

Stunning, Balroop! The way you’ve breathed life into luck itself and its endless pursuit is masterful.
Thank you so much for coming over to read, K. your feedback is appreciated. Welcome to Emotional Shadows.
Hello Balroop ji, I liked the phrase ‘cave of hope’. It’s unique as a cave signifies darkness and hope is positive and signifies light at the end of the tunnel. To enter the ‘cave’ is to be able to take risk and success comes to those who are willing to take the risk. A deeply meaningful poem.
Thank you Smitha. You understand the symbols so well! 🤗
Wow! What a profound and thought-provoking poem!
Thank you, Dawn.
Ah, so you chose hope, my friend. What a wonderfully insightful and reflective poem. It made me wonder about what I’d choose. Beautiful.
I was confused between luck and hope, as both sound promising yet keep us waiting. 😊
Hope is always about the future, but it’s a beautiful guidepost. ❤
