My Spirit Animal

This week’s challenge is to find your Spirit Animal by taking the quiz. Then, write a syllabic poem about this animal. What fun! This was such an innovative challenge! Thanks to Colleen for the inspiration to take the quiz. My spirit animal resonates with me. 😊

Spirit Animal Quiz result: You‘re The Tiger

I am not a Trophy

An epitome
of beauty and elegance
can you match the ache
of adventure in my blood?
gifted princely gait
that is envied by my peers
fascinated men
who came in hordes to conquer
my natural habitat

***

The cowards cowered
behind their whims and weapons
to rob my attire
and wear it as a trophy
or adorn their walls
with my magnificent coat
compassion of some,
alert animal lovers
granted me the right to live.
© Balroop Singh

I chose to write a double Chōka. It is a nine-line poem with 5-7-5-7-5-7-5-7-7 syllable count.

  1. The power and beauty of a Tiger shows clearly in your words, a song to your spirit animal.
Mine might be a Song bird or maybe a deer crossing the land with head held high.
    so gracious.

  2. Powerful poems, Balroop. The tiger is not meant to be a trophy — except in our hearts. 😊

  3. What a cool spirit animal, Balroop. Beautiful and powerful. I love the strength in your poem and despair trophy hunting on any kind. Loved it. ❤

    1. Isn’t it? I was so happy with the result of the quiz, as I know I share some of the traits of my spirit animal. 😀 Thank you Diana. Hope you would join the fun!

  4. I love tigers and your words on their right to live. I was born in the year of the tiger so I can easily relate to them. Great spirit animal, Balroop 🙂

    1. Thanks Colleen, I love new challenges and this one was real fun! I loved both the results. when I chose air, I became a butterfly. Then I thought – butterfly is not an animal! So next time I chose fire and here it was! Wow! I love tigers and would like to be like them. I also think my spirit animal fits me. 😀

  5. A magnificent Animal totem Balroop.. And loved both of your versions of poetry… And both hit home…
It is heart breaking how man has invaded his land, then seeks to hunt him and then takes pride in showcasing his trophy..
Man has much to learn from the Animal Kingdom.. Who do not kill for pleasure, .. Who is the animal? is what I ask..

Thought provoking both of them Balroop.. Thank you ❤ 🙏

    1. I agree with you Sue, man has much to learn from them! Greed leads him into their sacred surroundings, which man thinks he could conquer! Thanks for sharing your raw emotions, dear friend. 🤗

  6. magical, majestic, mighty, magnificent– aww, what a magnificent spirit animal. And such a marvelous poem to honor it. Wow. Lovely. Thanks.

  7. Balroop, the first part of your poem reminded me of The Beatles song, “Bungalow Bill” who “went out tiger hunting with his elephant and gun; in case of accidents, he always took his mom; he’s an all-American, bullet-headed Saxon mother’s son.” I am so glad that the tigers now have some protections ❤

    1. Historian Mahesh Rangarajan estimates that more than 80,000 tigers were slaughtered by kings, lords, generals, and Maharajahs from 1875 to 1925. What for? for game hunting, for fur, for displaying their skin in their drawing rooms!!
