Why is listening more important?

Listening

Listening is a basic skill, without which we cannot learn any language. Babies listen to human sounds and learn to say their first words. Yet we forget this when we have learnt to talk!

We interrupt, we disparage, we judge, we tune off, we argue, we shout when we don’t want to listen.

We can say a lot without actually uttering a word but listening is only possible if we pay attention.

Do you pay attention when you are listening? Just pause and think.

In today’s world, where multitasking is considered to be a superb skill, listening gets drowned in the maze of messaging, tweeting and checking updates on irresistible digital devices in our hands or the urge to catch up with our favorite shows.

A good communication can resolve all differences but both the sides have to listen. It is very easy to talk, talk and talk but when it comes to listening, often we presume what the other person has to say.

Just see how listening can do wonders:

  1. It facilitates effective communication:

When we are ready to listen we convey a calm message that we respect the other person, we are ready to dispel misunderstandings and arguments. As peter Drucker said, “the most important thing in communication is to hear what isn’t being said.” When we listen quietly and courteously, we may pick up those unsaid feelers. When we look into the eyes of the communicator, we may catch those vibes, which wont reach us if we are distracted.

  1. It improves relationships:

Listening ushers warmth into our bonds, it fosters care and trust. We know we can talk about any issue and we would be given the required attention. When we don’t listen to other person’s perspective, we tend to create our own images, which could be highly misleading. It is better to discuss your prejudices than harbor them and let them breed misinterpretations.

  1. It helps us understand people:Listening quote

There are many kinds of people and we can’t possibly know them without a bridge of communication between us. Those who pretend to be our friends at our workplace, those who may exploit us for their own professional strength and those who just create rifts by badmouthing. How do we know their true value? Only by listening to their side of the story and keeping our relationship networks open can we truly know their worth.

  1. It can calm emotions:

Good listening gives a natural boost to positive emotions but at the same time it rebuffs negative emotions like angst, anger, fear and stress. All clouds of doubt and discord disintegrate. We feel loved and relieved as our pent up thoughts get an outlet. A lot of burden gets offloaded and we can move ahead with new hopes.

  1. It leads us to profound lessons

Listening can make us better persons as it can motivate, inspire and encourage us to accomplish our goals. We can gather a lot of information, develop working relationships with those we may not like and work on social interactions, which can define our hidden potential. It can drive introverts out of their shell, promote acceptance as a way of life and understand that imperfections are normal.

Please remember! Listening doesn’t mean getting intimidated and bullied into whatever the other person says.

It means a healthy exchange of ideas and thoughts so that we can understand each other better.

It means erecting an edifice of empathetic approach and to be more positive.

It means learning analytical skills, which can foster healthy living.

It means we need to control our outbursts, be more considerate and forthcoming.

If listening has not been taught to you, it is never too late.

“There is as much wisdom in listening as there is in speaking–and that goes for all relationships, not just romantic ones.”- Daniel Dae Kim

Do you value listening? What has it taught you? I would love to hear your views.

Where Should I Begin?

bg3

Last night
An angel of forgiveness
Woke me up…
I was wonderstruck to see
Blue and purple light
In my room

She sat by my bedside
We had a cozy conversation
Caressing my locks, she counseled…
‘Forgive them dear,
Forgive them all
Don’t carry any affliction’

Abrasively I looked up
The pain in my eyes dwindled
With the promise – ‘I will try.’
A strange light spread around me
Immersed me completely
And my Angel smiled.

But I don’t know where to begin
Should I begin with childhood robbers?
Or devils I encountered
While growing up
Or tyrants
Who tried to snatch my freedom of speech?

Or those hypocrites
Who took me for a ride?
Or those who feigned friendship?
The list may be long
But the purple light of forgiveness
Is all around me, encompassing all.

It Was Not Just An Emotional Decision!

Not just emotional

Why I chose United States of America after retirement?

When people ask me why did you relocate to U.S.A, I have a very ready and simple answer…‘Strange is pull of your loved ones.’ Love is a dramatic driving force, the most powerful potion that we drink willingly.

When they ask how do I feel, I think about my blessings…I am nearer to my children and can meet them whenever I want.

My grandchildren don’t have to travel thousands of miles to hug me and then wonder why they live so far away. They would be having nice memories of their grand parents when they grow up.

I don’t have to wait to meet them and that too after a year or two.

Was it just an emotional decision? NO!

Emotions did play a significant role but little things do matter and so I would like to talk about those.

I admire my new surroundings for various reasons.

Healthy and fresh food:

I don’t know much about economic, health or security issues, which are universally relevant but I do know that the food which we buy here is much healthy and fresh, with all the nutrition labels, giving you the information what all you are going to consume. If I buy organic food, I don’t have to think whether it is actually organic. All kinds of cooked and ready to eat food are easily available for every pocket and palate.

DSC02277Landscaping and green cover:

When I look around how each and every empty space is aesthetically planned, kept clean and green, I get a reassurance that I have taken a good decision. Nature has always inspired and soothed me. Landscaping here doesn’t just look pleasing to the eyes; it also enhances our positivity, psychological and emotional well-being. I couldn’t have got better surroundings anywhere else. I just have to look out of the window to change my mood.

Discipline and courtesy:

People greet you with a smile, good morning or a hello when they pass by, instilling a feeling of goodness. Nobody stares or ogles at you! Nobody pushes you, the queues are most organized and people stand at a distance from each other. Nobody bumps into you and apologies are instant even if somebody happens to be in your way.

Road safety:

I-80_Eastshore_Fwy
No aggressive driving

Driving is stress free and most organized. People follow the rules and wait for their turn. Nobody drives aggressively, nobody gets into your way and lane driving is the norm, which is never flouted. You don’t have any fears that somebody might overtake or almost bump into your car from the side lane and scare you out of your wits.

Respect for pedestrians:

All vehicles stop for the pedestrian even when there is no intersection or zebra crossing. No driver expects you to stop and let him pass as the first right is given to the pedestrian. On busy streets, special road crossing devices have been installed to let the pedestrians take their turn to cross the road.

Respect for each other’s opinion:

People don’t shout you down and impose their own opinion on you. What you eat, wear and how you live is not anybody’s concern. Nobody intrudes into your privacy to comment on your body weight or sexual orientation. Peace and respect is a way of life here.

Peace:

Nobody honks. Even when you don’t happen to see within a second that the light has turned green. Nobody parks illegally. Handicapped parking is earmarked clearly in all parking areas and nobody flouts that rule. The dogs are well trained not to bark unnecessarily. No DJ’s, no loud music disturbs you at any time of the day or night.

Zero tolerance to littering:

You wont see even a little piece of paper anywhere in the parks, on the roads or anywhere near your home. In some areas where people don’t seem to bother, you could find a warning: $1000 fine for littering. Everyone respects the laws here or has to pay the penalty.

I have made some wonderful new friends. What more can you ask for? There must be more countries with such splendid amenities but this one suits me.

Future

Unknown Future

More than once I have made
Inroads into the future
Stepped into the unknown,
To peep, to think, to decide.

Amazing pictures have lured me,
A lovely deep forest, frightening.
A vast valley, intimidating
A long road, reassuring.

A positive spirit, soaring high
A nagging doubt, pulling back
A persistent hope, guiding me,
Assuring me…go ahead!

Though uncertain, I step forward
Trust is my only companion,
Love for loved ones
The only cementing force.

As I wait for the true picture
As I look at the fragile relationships
As I meet a new face everyday
I wonder why future is so obscure!

Why Are Some People More Emotional And Lovable?

Emotional intensity

Emotions rule the world…all emotional fools think so and I considered myself to be the one till I stumbled upon the research that recognizes ‘emotional intensity’ to be an authentic part of human brain.

These reflections are a consequence of tumultuous emotional phase that I have crossed successfully… emotions have been reigning over me for over a month now and I have understood why this space that I call my haven has been named ‘Emotional Shadows.’

However hard I try to push those shadows away, they keep on lingering, they come in various forms and always win me over to look at each situation from an emotional angle.

Probably I am born with a special streak, emotional aspects move me more than others albeit I am always searching for the reasons, which seem to be embedded somewhere in my DNA or my past.

Why are some people more emotional?

Why do some people get emotionally charged and others remain tranquil in the most challenging situations?

Scientists have found an answer to emotional intensity and responsiveness. Highly sensitive people are not abnormal and immature as they are dubbed to be! It is a ‘pattern of brain activation.’

They are extremely tuned to their environment due to an inherent trait called sensory processing sensitivity. (SPS) This trait is associated with their behavior and reactions.

Emotionally sensitive people are:79d1f6557a2f422c620a53a19e785a4b

  • More aware
  • More understanding
  • Self-motivated
  • Highly expressive
  • Intuitive
  • Instinctive
  • Easily perturbed

They experience the world in a different manner. They could be gifted with some special qualities, which surface when they feel loved.

They are extremely endearing and engaging. Only those who come closer to understand them can really appreciate them.

They are loved because of their emotional intensity, which can be discerned in their demeanor and conversation.

They find joy in little events:

Since emotions rule them, they can derive delight from insignificant events like running into an old acquaintance or a visit to their childhood home. Their attachments define them and they love to spend time in the past, reliving those moments and refreshing the memories.

They possess a passion for learning:

They dive headlong into every new activity that interests them. Age doesn’t dissuade them as they ride on the emotional wings of hope. Whatever they take up, they put their heart and soul into completing that task, without caring for the perils that they might encounter.

For them, all dreams are real:

They can never get deterred by the warnings and hazards rather get stimulated by them. They focus on their dreams with the same emotional intensity as their love for relationships, which are extremely important for them. They offer their best and expect the world to be good and kind.

Positive power drives them:

They may be having their dark moments but they don’t get frustrated easily as a unique positive energy within them makes them ride those dark horses to gallop away into the world they love to dwell in. Positivity is the hallmark of their personality. They possess the power to inspire others.

Emotionally sensitive people exhibit their emotions with pride and that eventually becomes their strength. They do not believe in hiding their sentiments and that is why they are lovable…only if you appreciate emotions!

Emotionally strong

“Never apologize for being sensitive or emotional.
Let this be a sign that you’ve got a big heart and aren’t afraid to let others see it. Showing your emotions is a sign of strength.” – Brigitte Nicole

Are you emotionally more sensitive than expected? I would love to hear your views.
