A Daughter
I can’t speak but
I feel suffocated.
The arms that are meant to cuddle, to nurture,
Feel like brambles but
I can’t speak.
I yearn for
The tender warmth of your womb,
When our breathing balanced
And your hopes soared,
I could hear you.
Why blame me for what I am?
Wasn’t it your choice?
Weary of societal jibes,
You too wanted a son.
So what if I’m the fourth child
Will you smother me in your arms?
For hours I keep crying for you but
I can’t speak.
When I learn your language,
I’ll support you, mama, I’ll speak for you
Together, we’ll fight the fears and threats.
Together, we’ll redefine our freedom.

This is so poignant Balroop. It touches my soul with its yearning. Thanks for joining in.
The expressions in the eyes of the mother and the child in this picture evoked my thoughts, Sadje. Thank you for the inspiration, dear friend. 🤗
Thanks a lot Balroop. It’s a pleasure
Balroop, this is deeply moving and heartbreaking, yet it carries such strength and resilience.
Much love,
David
Thank you David. All credit goes to the expressions in the eyes of the duo in the picture.
This is a deep one Balroop, very moving my friend.
Thank you Maggie.
My pleasure Balroop.
This poem tugged at my heartstrings as I felt the child’s desperation. Well done, Balroop!
Thank you Jan. Children are the silent sufferers and such emotions leave an indelible mark on their psyche.
Waouh Balroop, you wrote a moving and empowering poem at the same time. Some women can make a difference even when the odds are low.
Sending you warm wishes and may you have a nice day.
I am glad my words are reaching out to touch the hearts in a positive manner. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts, Marie. Stay blessed.
I read through this one twice, Balroop. There’s so much sadness and longing in it. And the resilience in that last stanza is powerful. Beautiful, my friend.
Thank you Diana. Isn’t the image so evocative? I looked in the eyes of the mother and the child and this poem wrote itself, within minutes.
Wow. It spoke right to you. Looking into the eyes of apes always makes me sad – such intelligence and emotion, and often living their lives in pens and cages.
So true! Caged living is so unfair.
Wow, Balroop. So powerful! Well done.
Thank you Denise.
Very moving verse.
Thank you Violet.
This poem went straight to my heart, Balroop. The longing is palpable. Beautiful and moving. 💕
Thank you Lauren.
What a touchng poem, Balroop!
Thank you Dawn.
Your poem, Balroop, brought to mind the tragic result of China’s One Child Policy. Boys grew up as “little emperors,” and as adults, a shortage of young women forced many of them to look internationally for brides.
Your poem is very poignant, and unfortunately, it has parallels in real life. 🐣🐥
Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Cheryl. Yes, the theme of this poem expresses the realities of many girls.
Wow, this is an amazing interpretation of this picture, Balroop.
Thank you Robbie.
Such a sad and beautifully written poem, Balroop!

Thank you Yvette.
Very moving and heartbreaking, Balroop. But that resilience at the end is heartwarming.
Thank you Punam.
You are very welcome, Balroop.
This poem reminded me of a news I saw today- of a girl whose father left because she was a girl child. She promised her mother that she’d take care of her when she grew up (just like the last lines of the poem) and today, she passed the civil services exam to join the IAS.
There are many such unfortunates who don’t get the right opportunities. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Smitha.
This is so powerful, Balroop. What a surprise to read your poem after laying eyes on this image. Very creative interpretation!
Thank you Lisa.
Well-said and powerful Balroop. 🥰 What a comforting approach to this challenge my dear! Thanks for sharing! 😍💖😘
