#TankaTuesday #Poetry Challenge

This week, the challenge is given by an accomplished poet, Willow. She wants the poet to choose a piece of music and “write a syllabic poem about how the music either makes you feel or what it suggests to you.”

This iconic song, shot in 1960, still inspires the lovers to believe that love knows no fears. She is a commoner and loves the Prince but the king promises her freedom from imprisonment if she dances in his court. She grabs the opportunity to declare her love that is eternal, despite the consequences.

A string of dodoitsu has been inspired from this song. Thanks to Tanka Tuesday host.

A dodoitsu is a Japanese form of poetry that is sometimes performed as a folk song. It has 26 syllables: 7 in the first, second and third lines, and 5 in the last line. (7/7/7/5). No rhyming. No title.

Magical aura of love
immerses two souls in a pool
of divine joy that freezes time
moments dare not stir.

***

it ushers spring into life
it whispers songs of delight
but adds embers of passion
love is so sublime.

***

love is a cascading creek
that flows with blithe abandon
donning beams of ecstasy
carves its own pathways.

***

enigmatic yet precious
it smashes all the barriers
power of love is superb
do not challenge it.

  1. Hi Balroop thank you so much for joining in. I do love Bollywood and Nollywood movies. The colour, singing, dancing and stories always capture my heart even if I have to read the subtitles or guess the story.

I love that you caught the feel of this song in your poem my favourite stanza is

    love is a cascading creek
    that flows with blithe abandon
    donning beams of ecstasy
    carves its own pathways.

I feel it really captures the mood of the song. Thank you for sharing 💜💜🙏

    1. Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Willow. Indian cinema has really evolved from the days of this song and many love songs have been shot with a better technology but this one remains iconic due to defiant rendering at the cost of losing her life. I find it very inspiring.

    1. Thank you David. The expressions of the actors are so good that you can understand the lyrics but music and dance don’t need any language, they are complete in themselves.

  2. Balroop, first I was caught up with the moving and emotional song – but what happened then?! Towards the end there is a great turn to the 60s psychedelic camera work which actually works really well. Your poem beautifully catches the unstoppable power and raptures of love, a life force of its own. This is a unique prompt and I love your response to it! Xx

    1. Just for your curiosity, the commoner who dared to love a prince and defy the orders of the King was arrested again and thrown in prison. The prince challenged his father for a war. It is believed to be a true part of history and this movie depicts it superbly.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Annika and yes, it is a unique prompt.

  3. Good choice of music, Balroop! Your poem is powerful, especially the lines “enigmatic yet precious
it smashes all the barriers.” BTW, I have a problem signing into my WP account, so I used my Google account to comment.

  4. I loved the music and your tanka poetry, Balroop. Willow pointed out my favorite stanza too. I love how this seemed to flow together. I’m sorry I’m so late. It’s been a week (or two). 🩷

  5. These are beautiful tanka, Balroop! Thank you so much for your wonderful review of my book, Sun Haiku: 365 Days of Sunshine, on Amazon. I appreciate it so much! I am sharing it on my blog this afternoon.
